New for 2026 it gets electronically controlled dampers, and it runs a 4.444 final drive with all eight CVT ratios changed rather than just the axle, which is what lets low-ratio gradient control walk it up a 40 percent grade.

The rest is built around actually leaving pavement. Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires with raised white letters on 17-inch matte black wheels, and a full-size spare rather than the temporary unit. What does the Outback Wilderness actually add over the other trims?

Is the Wilderness turbocharged?

Yes, and it is turbo-only. There is no naturally aspirated Wilderness. The 2.4-liter makes 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft and tows 3,500 pounds. Worth flagging because the Forester and Crosstrek Wilderness models are naturally aspirated, so the badge does not mean the same thing across the Subaru range.

How much fuel economy does the Wilderness give up?

It is the thirstiest Outback at roughly 23 mpg combined, against 24 for the other turbo trims and 27 for the naturally aspirated ones. The all-terrain tires and the shorter gearing are where that goes. It still takes regular 87 octane.

Can I get Highway Hands Free Assist on a Wilderness?

No. It is standard on Touring and Touring XT and not available on Wilderness at any price. If you want hands-free highway driving and off-pavement capability in the same vehicle, Subaru does not currently build it, and we would rather tell you that than let you find out after delivery.

How loud are the all-terrain tires on the highway?

Noticeable above about 60 mph, and more so than a Touring on road tires. Whether it bothers you is genuinely personal, which is why we suggest driving a Wilderness and a Limited back to back on the same stretch rather than reading about it. Most people who need the clearance decide it is a fair trade.

Is the Wilderness worth it if I mostly drive paved roads?

Probably not, and we will say so. If your gravel is a driveway rather than a forest road, a Premium or Limited rides better, is quieter and returns four more mpg. The Wilderness earns its money when you are regularly on washed-out surfaces or towing to a trailhead.
