Touring XT is the Outback with nothing left on the table, and it is the trim we recommend most often to people who both tow and commute. The 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER makes 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft and tows 3,500 pounds. Highway Hands Free Assist is standard, which only Touring and Touring XT can say. The 360-degree Surround View camera is standard. So is Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, Harman Kardon audio, a power moonroof and 19-inch black machined wheels.

It is worth being clear about what that combination means, because no other trim offers it. Limited XT gives you the turbo and the camera but not Hands Free. Touring gives you Hands Free and the Nappa cabin but only 180 horsepower. Touring XT is the only Outback where the capability and the highway assistance arrive in the same vehicle, and that is the whole argument for it.

The structural numbers are the same as the rest of the two-row range: 8.7 inches of ground clearance, 34.6 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and 80.5 with them down, ladder roof rails rated 800 pounds static and 220 dynamic with the new 220-pound lateral rating. Expect about 24 mpg combined rather than the 27 the 2.5-liter returns. Both engines take regular 87 octane, so the turbo costs you fuel economy but not a fuel grade.

Both run the 2.4-liter turbo and tow 3,500 pounds. Touring XT adds Highway Hands Free Assist, which Limited XT cannot have at any price, plus Nappa leather instead of perforated leather-trimmed, ventilated front seats and 19-inch black machined wheels rather than black. If hands-free highway driving matters, this is the only turbo that offers it.

Does the Outback Touring XT need premium fuel?

No. The 2.4-liter turbo runs on regular 87 octane, same as the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter. The turbo costs you about three mpg combined, not a fuel grade. That surprises people coming from other turbocharged vehicles, and it is a genuine running-cost advantage.

Is Touring XT overkill if I only tow a few times a year?

Possibly, and we will say so. If you tow twice a summer and otherwise commute, a Touring gives you the same cabin and the same Hands Free at 27 mpg instead of 24. The turbo earns its keep when you tow regularly or routinely load four people and gear up a grade. Tell us how you actually use it and we will point you at the honest answer.

What are the roof rails rated for?

800 pounds static and 220 pounds dynamic, and new for 2026 they carry a 220-pound lateral rating as well, which is a first for Subaru. The lateral figure is what makes hanging a bike or a rooftop tent off the side of the crossbar a designed use rather than a gamble. The crossbars have measurement markers moulded in, which is a small thing you appreciate the first time you mount something.

How is the Outback Touring XT for a family of five?

It is a five-seat two-row SUV, so it fits five and 34.6 cubic feet of gear behind them. If you need a third row, the Ascent is the Subaru that has one and there is no three-row Outback in any trim. Worth a look at both if the fifth seat and the cargo are competing.
